What is Yoga?

Yoga is a system of exercise that stretches and strengthens the muscles through asanas, or poses. However, it is so much more than an exercise routine, and many people begin a yoga practice because of the holistic approach that offers benefits for spirit, body and mind. There are countless different schools of yoga, and all have their own unique beliefs and techniques. This article will teach you a little about the five most common, although there are many other variations that aren't listed here.

There's no real way to tell where or when yoga originated- it is widely believed to have come out of India. A 2000 year old book called the Yoga Sutra is the first written mention of yoga, and before that, it was an oral tradition. Anyone, young or old, can benefit from a yoga practice, and poses can be adapted to meet physical limitations. If you are tired of the same old gym routines, try a yoga class. It will improve both your physical and spiritual well being.
